Virginia Grace Hansen

Ellison Bay – Virginia Grace (Kramer) Hanson of Ellison Bay passed away on May 15, 2022 at Door County Medical Center in Sturgeon Bay at the age of 97.

Virginia is a lifelong resident of Door County. She was born on July 15, 1924, in a German settlement a few miles south of Sisters Bay, to Melvin and Mabel (Grass) Kramer. On October 2, 1943, she married Russell Hansen of Ellison Bay at Trinity Lutheran Church. They have farmed and lived on the Hansen homestead on the top of Ellison Bay for 64 years. She attended Liberty Grove and Sister Bay Primary Schools and attended Gibraltar High School for three years. During her senior year, her family moved to Brussels, where her father was a cheesemaker. She went to Brussels High School and graduated in 1942. There she met all her Belgian friends. Their friendship lasted all these years. She plays clarinet and violin in the band. Virginia was baptized at Sawyer in Sturgeon Bay and in 1941 at Zion Lutheran Church in Sister Bay.

Russell passed away on April 30, 2008. They spent many winters at their home in Ruskin, Florida, and traveled to Sweden, where Russell’s father, Albert, was born. Virginia enjoys refinishing many antique furniture and spends a lot of time searching for the family history of the Hansen and Kramer families. She is a member of the Gulf Lutheran Shepherds and Freewood Historical Society, of which she is proud to be a part. She was always excited to see large freighters passing through the waters of Green Bay. Earlier this spring, she was excited to see her first from her home. Her love of music – she taught herself to play the accordion – polka music is her favorite. Virginia continued to live on the Hansen Homestead until her death.

She will be greatly missed by her daughters Cheryl (Gene) Olson and Vicky (Bob) Herman; daughter-in-law Bonnie Hanson; sister, Vina Anderson; and niece and nephew. She also has seven grandchildren, Jay (Vicky) Olson of Ellison Bay, Marcy (Gary) Anderson of Cedar Grove, Jody Olsen of Ellison Bay, Paula of Sturgeon Bay Hansen, Heidi Wilkins of Denver, NC, Amanda (Troy) Kelly of Longhorn, PA, and Emily (Josh) Opitz of Sister Bay, PA; 14 great-grandchildren, Christopher (Becca) Peterson, Nicholas (Michaela) Peterson , Logan Peterson, Brianna (Michael) Long, Griffin Olson, Preston Pluff, Kayla Olson, Eva Olson, Austin Hanson, Avery Bies, Samuel Wilkins, Brooklyn Kelly, Jordan Kelly and Arlo Opitz; six great-grandchildren, Maddie Sonn, Brinley, Paisley, Cellar, Calvin and Gianna Peterson.

Her parents died before her. husband; brother, Willard Kramer; son Bruce; infant son Ned William; siblings; and nephews and nieces.

Virginia’s Life is celebrated at a funeral at the Shepherd of the Bay Lutheran Church in Ellison Bay on Friday, May 20, 2022 at 12:00 pm, with visitation at the church from 10:00 am to service hours. Virginia would be very proud and her great grandchildren (Christopher, Nicholas, Logan, Brianna, Griffin, Kayla, Eva, Austin, Avery, Samuel, Jordan, Brooklyn and Arlo) Can take her to Lutheran Cemetery, her final resting place at Trinity, where she is buried last.

Memorial donations can be made to the Shepherds of the Gulf Lutheran Church or the Freewood Historical Society, if needed.
