Spring Grove wins, loses, regular season ends

The final week of the regular season started as expected for the boys in Spring Grove, with an easy two-game sweep of winless Schaeffer Academy on May 17 with nearly equal scores. 13-3 and 13-2. However 11-10 After the Lions’ convincing 21-10 win at Glenville earlier this season, the Alden Conger/Grenville Emmons home setback was not expected. The May 19 rematch results deprive Spring Grove of its last chance to share the conference title. The Lions didn’t play championship-level baseball, but almost won anyway. One game over, a line-driven double kills the Spring Grove rally in the final inning.

The next day, a completely different game was lost in a non-conference game.Lions have no turnovers at Preston after stumbled by turnovers against AC/GE 10-0 Disappointing running rules compared to Fillmore Central/Lansborough. Pitched some success against AC/GE, but only singled out left-handed ace Cooper Ferry against the Falcons.

Spring Grove finished the regular season 11-7 and finished third in the league with a 10-4 record, one game ahead of fourth-ranked AC/GE (10-8, 9-5 SEC). Shaffer drops to 0-20 (0-14 seconds). Fillmore Central/Lanceborough improved to 6-11.

Spring Grove opened the 15-team 1A Tournament on May 25 with the No. 7 seed, hosting No. 10 Wabasha-Kellogg (6-13). Eleven of those 13 WK losses were against AA teams.

SG 13, Schaeffer College 3 (6 innings)

Impressively, there were no turnovers in a game, the ball was hit all over the park, and both teams combined for 20 hits. However, there are also many thefts. Eight Lions contributed to 13 stolen bases, including four by Matthew Doering and two by Braedon Solie. Eight Lions had 12 hits, including a 3-pointer by Elijah Solum (2-for-4), while Caleb Griffin and Thyssen Grind (Tysen Grinde) (1 for 1) each hit a double.

It started with the game’s top four Lions batters scoring in the opening six possessions. It ended with Jaxon Strinmoen (2 for 4, 2 RBI) on Grinde’s single, a 10-run rule win in the bottom of the sixth inning with just one out.

SG 13, Schaeffer College 2

Elijah Solum went 4-for-4 with threes and twos while driving two runs and stealing two bases, while freshman receiver Ezra Griffin went 5-3 for more than four. The game’s top three batters scored Spring Grove to give it a 3-0 lead and added runs in every inning but one.

The pitching victory went to freshman Ben Udstohn, who had no run and only one hit in three innings of relief while striking out six and one. Shaffer managed just two hits and needed a combination of six walks and two hitters to avoid being eliminated. Spring Grove is now 11-6 against Schaeffer Academy.

Alden-Conger/Grenville-Emmons 11, SG 10

It looked like the Lions might survive a six-turnover, under-par performance, possibly tying at triple and winning at second. But a thumping third-base drive ended the game with an unassisted double.

The visitors scored first, but Springgrove responded with six volleys for a 6-1 lead after the first inning. The score was 7-2 before AC/GE went four innings in a row. There were three Lion turnovers in the first inning, and two others gave AC/GE a 10-7 lead in the fifth. Only 3 of the visitors’ 11 runs were winning runs.

Springgrove never caught up, but ran back twice. Going into the final seventh inning, the score was 10-9. A final Lion turnover, wild pitching and passing gave the visitors an 11-9 lead. In the bottom of the final seventh inning, a walk and two batters set the stage for Soren’s sacrificial flight to go 11-10 with only one out, second-and-third runners. but it is not the truth.

Logan Brumm had a Big Lions bat, went 2-2 with the doubles, and drove five times at the same time. Jonah Udstuen batted 2 for 3, stole two bases, singled and scored 3 runs of his own.

AC/GE snapped a seven-game losing streak against Spring Grove. The Lions still lead the combined program 8-2. But before sharing with Alden-Conger, GE had won 15 on its own and lost just five at Spring Grove.

Fillmore Central/Lansborough 10, SG 0

There were only three Lion runners — catcher interference in the third, Jonah Udstuen’s single in the fifth, and a walk in the sixth before the game ended an inning early with the 10-inning rule. Ferry, a junior southpaw, struck out and walked just one.

For the Falcons, Dillon O’Connor went 3-4 with a double and two runs. Jordan Peterson (1-for-4) had another 2-bagger.

The Lions have won 2 and lost 3 against the Falcons since Spring Grove resumed baseball in 2016.
