First Look: Travelers Championship

Five of the top six in the FedExCup standings will tee off at the Travelers Championship, led by No. 1 Scottie Scheffler.

Harris English is back to defend his title starting in 2021, beating Kramer Hickok in an 8-hole playoff.

site notes: English is back in action after qualifying at the U.S. Open. He’s been on hold from January until the Memorial Championship at Workday as he recovers from hip surgery…Scotty Scheffler, who is at the country club for the U.S. Open, will be looking to expand his time at FedEx Cup and Official World Golf lead rankings…Sam Burns, who is second in the FedExCup, will also tee off…Others in the field include 2022 PGA Championship winner Justin Thomas, last season’s FedEx Cup winner Patrick Cantley and Rory McIlroy, who is playing his fourth week qualifying on the tour…Cantley shot a 60 as an amateur at TPC River Heights in 2011…Jordan St. Peath, who won the Travelers in 2017, was late Friday afternoon…Tex standout Cole Hamer will make his tour debut as a pro…Other young stars of the Travelers will include Ben James, Michael Thorbjornsen and Haskins Award winner Chris Gotterup. James of Milford, Connecticut, is the No. 1 junior player in the country, while Chris Gotrup won the Haskins Award as the top player in college golf this year. Gottrup, now a pro, made the cut at the U.S. Open…others in the field include four-time Grand Slam champion Brooks Koepka, Rich Fowler, Zander Schauffele and U.S. Open breaker Joel Daman.

FedEx Cup: The winner will receive 500 FedEx Cup points.

course: TPC River Heights, par 70, 6,852 yards. One of the shortest courses on the tour has a low score but still presents a tricky challenge to the game’s best players. This marks the 70th anniversary of the Travelers Championship and TPC River Heights has been a tour venue for 39 years. Bobby Weed was the last architect responsible for upgrading the Connecticut course, with tour players Howard Twitty and Roger Matlbie as consultants. The crunch is when golfers play around a 4-acre lake at Nos. 15-17. TPC River Highlands is where Jim Furyk had his lowest score on the PGA Tour in 2016 with a 58.

story plot: This is the first year the Traveler will be in full attendance since the COVID-19 pandemic…The venue at TPC River Heights has plenty of firepower and six of the world’s top 10 are teeing off…The Traveler has history for the game opportunities for young stars in . This year is no different from what James, Thorbjornsen, Gotterup and Hammer have done in the field. The likes of Sahith Theegala, John Pak, Collin Morikawa, Viktor Hovland and Cantlay have been exempted in the past… Since 2016, every Traveler’s champion has played in the U.S. Open the week before. English finished third at Torrey Pines a year ago, then won at TPC River Highlands… The Travelers have made 25 extra holes, and last year’s eight-hole playoff was the longest.

72 hole record: 258. Kenny Perry (2009)

18-hole record: 58. Jim Furyk (4th round, 2016).

Last time: Harris English emerges from the second-longest postseason in Tour history to claim the 2021 Travelers. After England and Kramer Hickok birdied the 72nd hole of the regular season, the two played back and forth for seven holes before England birdied the 5-foot extra hole on the 8th. Hickok missed a 36-footer earlier. It was England’s second win of the season. Hickok’s runner-up finish was the best of his career on the PGA Tour. Mark Leishman finished third.
