Could Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 be the best-selling franchise in the series?

Last update time:

Call of Duty 2022 recently debuted in the form of Modern Warfare 2. The latest installment in the series is not a remake, but a sequel to Modern Warfare (2019). The Modern Warfare remake was largely successful, with the game setting a new record for the franchise, outselling Call of Duty Black Ops and Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3, the first two top dogs.

By the end of summer 2020, MW had sold more than 30 million copies and garnered more than $600 million in sales within its first three days of release. This makes the game the greatest digitally open game in Activision history. At the time, the game sold the most digital copies of the game in three days on PS4 and was the most successful CoD release on PC. As of December 18, 2019, Activision confirmed Call of Duty: Modern Warfare grossed over $1 billion.

Just because it’s the newest Call of Duty doesn’t mean it’s going to be the best-selling

Call of Duty had a rough time around 2013, and the franchise’s popularity was slowly declining. The franchise may never have recovered had it not been for the free-to-play Warzone, however, the success of the battle royale shooter speaks for itself. “Modern Warfare 2019”, released simultaneously with “Battlefield”, achieved gold sales of 30 million for the first time in a long time, so what has changed?

Call of Duty game sales:

Call of Duty WWII was a huge failure

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2019 has been a relative success, taking a cult classic, arguably the greatest Call of Duty ever, and rebooting it. Built on a brand new engine, the game also brings the beloved BR game – Warzone to our screens.

The CoD franchise will always sell millions of copies, and it has die-hard fans on multiple platforms. There have been many hiccups along the way, with some disappointing titles over the past decade, and people may be less willing to pay for the latest releases. Leaks and rumors suggest that there may be some very familiar game modes in Modern Warfare 2, giving players what they want. Hey Infinity Ward, how about some modding tools? A Tarkov-inspired game mode and an RS6-inspired game mode sounds great if true, but let’s open it up to the community with modding support to see the return of esports?

Warzone 2 integration with Modern Warfare 2 could be huge

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 will integrate with Warzone, just like Vanguard and Black Ops Cold War did, however, we can expect Warzone 2 to be an entirely new game. It is believed that the latest Warzone will be brand new and created in the same new engine as MW2, not just an update. This will mean a new feel, upgraded graphics, gunplay and new game content.

As of January 2022, Warzone still averaged over 60,000 viewers on Twitch. It has declined since peaking last April, but can a successor surpass such numbers? It is certainly possible.

It’s a safe bet that this will be the best-selling Call of Duty game to date, but until more information about the game is revealed, it’s hard to know for sure. It will be interesting to see if they port Modern Warfare 2 to mobile platforms, as the current mobile game amassed over 100 million downloads worldwide in its first two months of release.

According to a Newzoo report, esports viewers and enthusiasts will continue to grow in 2022, reaching 532 million and 318 million, respectively. While the Call of Duty franchise has largely stayed out of the field for a long time, Warzone is big enough and has an audience to support further development. Additionally, CoD could easily return to competitive play with a modified version of its fabled Search and Destroy game mode. The truth is, this team doesn’t need to rely on esports to succeed, but with esports generating nearly $1.38 billion worldwide by the end of 2022, why don’t you want a piece of the pie?
