Don’t expect to see the return of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’s controversial 2009 game without the Russian mission in the upcoming game of the same name.
The upcoming Modern Warfare 2 is the sequel to the hit reboot of 2019’s first Modern Warfare game. It may have the same name as the 2009 game that featured the infamous quest, but Infinity Ward confirmed to GamesBeat that the reboot won’t include anything like that.
One of the most important revelations from the interview was the announcement that there would be no missions like “No Russian,” a level originally included in Modern Warfare 2’s 2009 debut (and its 2020 remake).Designed by Respawn Entertainment co-founder and former Apex Legends narrative design director Mohammad Allawi, the single-player campaign mission requires players to gain the trust of Russian terrorists by participating in a mass shooting at a Moscow airport. The title of the quest comes from an instruction given to the player character before the quest begins: “Remember, no Russian.” The order is intended to remind members of the terrorist team not to speak their native language to maintain anonymity when participating in a shooting.
“For me, we’re very careful about what we put in. If we feel it serves the story, or it serves what we want to do, we put in something, something that’s probably more avant-garde.” Infinity Ward game director Jack O’Hara explained in an interview when asked about the violent missions in the original game. “But if we don’t, then there’s no need to deal with this kind of thing for no reason. We always want people to think about part of the story. We don’t want them to be just going for a ride,”
No Russians is one of the most violent missions – if not the most violent – in the original Modern Warfare 2 and its remake. But it’s worth noting that the player can complete the mission without firing a shot – the player can walk through the airport without firing a shot and wait for the carnage to end. There is also an option to skip a level entirely without the player being penalized for it.
Still, those who choose to take part in the mission will face horrific scenarios: innocent civilians fleeing for their lives, while shot victims crawl for cover – often before they reach safety . Long bloodstains smeared the floor as screams of injuries echoed through the airport terminal. Corpses piled up. Admittedly, it’s ugly and, for some, hard to play. A playtester who served in the military in real life refused to play the level at all, which is what prompted the developers to add a penalty-free option to skip missions. Still, many players criticized the quest for its intense, creepy violence, with some arguing that the rework actually made the quest more painful.
Infinity Ward and Activision revealed a lot about Modern Warfare 2 this week, including what to expect from its campaign. The game doesn’t feature a zombie mode or excessive environmental destruction in multiplayer. It’s scheduled to release on October 28 on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. The PC version will be available on Steam for $70.
