2022 Memorial Championship odds, venue: Surprising PGA picks, predictions from golf model known as 8 majors

Outside of the majors, few events on the PGA Tour are as prestigious as the Memorial Championship. Founded by Jack Nicklaus, this year’s $12 million prize pool is second only to The Players Championship in regular-season non-professional events. The 2022 Memorial Tournament kicks off Thursday at Muirfield Village Golf Club, near Nicklaus’ hometown of Columbus, Ohio, designed by the 18-time major champion.

With the U.S. Open just two weeks away, the venue for the 2022 Memorial Championship is piling up as pros look to look their best. Caesars Sportsbook names 2020 champion Jon Rahm 9-1 favorite, Rory McIlroy at 10-1 in latest 2022 Memorial Tournament odds rate is close behind. Patrick Cantley, who has won the event twice before, was listed at 14-1 while Jordan Spieth entered at 18-1. Before making any 2022 Memorial Championship picks, be sure to check out PGA Tour predictions and betting advice from SportsLine’s proven golf models.

SportsLine’s proprietary model, created by DFS pro Mike McClure, has been in demand since the PGA Tour resumed in June 2020. In fact, its best bet has been over $9,500 since then, winning game after game.

McClure’s models include Justin Thomas’ best bet to win the 2022 PGA Championship. That bet hit +1600, and McClure’s best bet returned nearly $800 throughout the tournament. At the 2022 Masters, McClure’s role model is Scottie Scheffler’s first career major title before the weekend.

Additionally, McClure’s best bets include Morikawa’s outright win at the 2021 Open Championship, even though he’s listed as a huge 40-1 long shot. The scene of Jon Rahm (10-1) winning his first career major at the 2021 U.S. Open is also modeled. Going into the weekend, Ram was two shots behind the lead, but the model still thought he was the winner.

The same pattern also locks in eight majors heading into the weekend. Anyone who followed it saw huge returns.

Now that the 2022 Memorial Championship (see tickets on StubHub) is coming up, SportsLine simulated the race 10,000 times with surprising results. Head over to SportsLine now to see projected leaderboards.

Top 2022 Memorial Tournament Predictions

The model called for a huge shock at the 2022 Memorial Championship: Spieth, one of Vegas favorites, struggled and didn’t even make the top 10. Spieth has historically played well at Muirfield, but has not been near the top of the odds board to prove his level. He finished in the top 10 in nine attempts. Third place was his best effort and came back in 2015.

It’s been an up-and-down season for Spieth, who has one win and two runner-up finishes. But he also missed promotion to the Masters and The Players Championship. In addition, he failed to finish in the top 30 in tough sessions at the PGA Championship and the Phoenix Open. The model didn’t like his chances of facing tougher competition this week and suggested dwarfing him in the 2022 Memorial Championship stakes.

Another surprise: Victor Hofland went 22-1 from long range to win the championship. The Norwegian hasn’t played well in this particular game in the past, but he did find success at Muirfield. The 2020 Workday Charity Open — a one-time PGA Tour event due to the COVID-19 pandemic — was played at the course, with Hofland leading the final round before finishing third.

Two years later, Hovland is a better player and his irons are stronger. He was fourth in strokes scored: close to the green (0.899) and 12th in strokes scored: driver (0.580). He’s already had two wins and three other top-10s, and Hofland has rarely had a bad game as he’s made nine straight cuts and is the fourth-longest active player on the tour. For the world No. 7 golfer, Hofland is an absolute steal at his current 2022 Memorial Championship odds.

How to Make a 2022 Memorial Tournament Pick

The model targets four other golfers at odds of 20-1 or better who will make a surprise run, and it also locks in a huge 80-1 long shot in its best bet. Anyone who backs these long shots can hit the ground running. You can only see a selection of models here.
